Since webmail changed the concept of email platforms and took over from hard disk based systems such as Outlook Express, Yahoo Mail has stuck ahead of the pack of webmail based clients. Webmail came with very many benefits by eliminating the need to transfer email archives from to new computers, eliminating the need to synchronize between computers and above all providing easy access of email from any point on the globe.
Yahoo Mail is a web email service that is provided free of charge by Yahoo!. The mail service started its operations in the year 1997. Yahoo mail came as a revolution to webmail by introducing inbuilt security scanning and almost unlimited email storage space. All these benefits came free of charge to subscribers and encouraged the proliferation of personal email. To date, Yahoo mail is estimated to have over 300 million users making it the second largest email service provider.
Yahoo is now offering 2 options for their interface. These are the new and advanced ‘All New Yahoo Mail!’ which is based on Ajax and closely resembles outlook and the traditional Mail Classic interface which is legacy based requires full page scrolling. The Classic Mail is more suitable for use on slow internet connections. All New Mail is better suited for a perfect web experience having introduced a tab system that allows opening multiple instances of mails and also allows for seamless switching between the tabs.
The advantage that All New Mail has over Classic Mail is evident in the newly introduced features such as Messenger integration, unlimited storage, calendar integration, SMS Messaging in certain countries, Windows Live Messenger integration, Keyboard shortcuts, improved search facilities and Applications.
Yahoo mail allows for direct access to mail via IMAP and SMTP servers. However the secured and non secured IMAP servers prompt for a particular IMAP command i.e. “ID (“GUID” “1″)” so as to allow login from any global server. This is very important as it allows for modification of open source email clients to launch the ID command or use an IMAP proxy to add the command hence allow login to serves.
Apart from free email service, Yahoo offers Business email where they give 10 distinctive email accounts with similar features as the plus version and customized email and domain name. However the business email service is still under development and testing and show some incompatibilities with browsers such as Safari.
